On that night, the pregnant woman was dying and the male pa-tient who had been admitted on March 22 was no better; the opera-tion had not stopped his cerebral hemorrhage.
For the whole of Guinea, too, it was a hard night. The announcement of the Ebola outbreak, which had been issued by the government the previous day, did not seem to draw much attention from people in the areas struck hardest or earliest by the virus. Life went on as usual. Government offiaals did not realize that, in their country, the sick and people living in abject poverty were clear about one thing:When an Ebola case was suspected, the patient would be forably taken to the hospital and given a lethal injection; many people had been cruelly treated this way duting epidemics in the past. This process was known colloquially as "going to the avilized guillotine."
Faced with Ebola, while poor people responded with indiffer-ence, wealthy Guineans, no matter where they lived, would flock to the capital once they sensed anything wrong using any means available and seek treatment at the best hospital in the country -the Sino-African Friendship Hospital; they knew in Grunea only the Chinese-built hospital and Chinese doctors could save them. The businessman who was admitted on March 18 was one such wealthy Guinean. His name was Savane Mory. He immediately realized that he rrught be in danger one day when he felt unwellin an area affect-ed by Ebola, so he paid someone a lot of money to send him to the Sino-African Friendship Hospital, hoping that doctors thefe could save his life. As it turned out, two days later at the hospital, the wealthy businessman managed to see Chinese doctors, who did all they could to save him. His fate was doomed, however, because no one at the hospital knew anything about Ebola then, and there was no drug in the world that could stop the pfogression of the disease. But his death was just the beginning of the disaster. He had already inadvertently spread the virus to all his family. members who died also, more frighteningly, he had brought the virus from far-flung jungles and marshes to the capital city, to the best Guinean hospital, and to innocent Chinese... We must bear in mind that behind those nineteen Chinese doctors were 1.3 billion Chinese people, 120 mil-lion of whom interacted every day with another six billion people all over the world!
As a leading expert in heart bypass surgery, Dr. Kong was usual-ly extremely calm. In my interview, he remarked: "Even at the most critical point, the best doctors usually won't panic. The calmer you are, the better you can work with your skills and expertise."
"But in the final ten days of March 2014 in Conakry, especially when Ilearned two of our team members had had close contact with Ebola patients, I couldn't calm down at all. Although I tried to look composed in front of people, the anxiety and stress I felt were beyond words," Dr. Kong said one year later in his small office at Beijing Anzhen Hospital.
