Original Surname of Yan Ziling Was Zhuang
Yan Ziling, lived in the end of the Western Han and the beginning of the Eastern Han. He was recognized as a man of great morality. In fact, the original surname of Yan Ziling was Zhuang. Since the name of Emperor Hanmingdi of the Eastern Han was Liu Zhuang, in order to avoid Zhuang, the given name of Emperor Hanmingdi, people changed his surname to Yan whcih had a similar meaning with Zhuang in Chinese. However, Yan Ziling himself didn’t know it, because he had passed away when Liu Zhuang became emperor, i.e. people changed his name after his death. Now, we call him Yan Ziling according to the name in the ancient books; but his surname was Zhuang when the following story happened.
In his childhood, Yan Ziling had gone away from home to study. Since he was diligent, straightforward and knowledgeable, he had been very famous at a young age. At that time, controversial Wang Mang came into power and asked Yan Ziling to help him govern the country. But Yan Ziling declined and became a hermit.
Afterwards, Liu Xiu came to power and became Emperor Guangwu, the first emperor of the Eastern Han. Liu Xiu and Yan Ziling had been close friends when they were young. During that period, they studied together in the day and slept on the same bed at night, so there was a profound friendship between them. After becoming emperor, Liu Xiu looked for Yan Ziling everywhere because he wanted Yan Ziling to take on an official position of the Eastern Han...
